The Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) is used to monitor the location and movement of commercial fishing vessels in various different fisheries within US Federal jurisdiction. Previously, VMS was required for For-Hire Charter Boats and Headboats operating in the Southeast Fishery of the United States, to comply with NOAA regulations. The ZenVMS product was a great option to meet these requirements.

However, as of February 23, 2023, the final rule implementing the Gulf of Mexico For-Hire Reporting Amendment has been set aside by the 5th Circuit Decision in the Gulf for-hire reporting litigation. This means that vessel owners and operators of federally permitted Gulf for-hire vessels are no longer required to have a VMS unit or to submit For-Hire trip declarations or logbooks for the time being.
